Delos Van Earl

“THE PHOENIX SERIES”
February 3 ~ March 12, 2005

Our exhibition showcases an exciting new body of sculptural work by Delos Van Earl, who moved to the desert in 1987. This personable and articulate artist has

a loyal following of collectors, his artwork gracing many fine residences throughout California and beyond.

"Rooftop Triptych" SOLD

Van Earl’s elegant abstract creations,

self-described “sculptural paintings and painted sculptures” made of steel or bronze, are painted in vibrant primary colors.

“I approach these sculptures as if they were paintings, using steel to create the background and shapes,” he says. “Then I use special paint to create the color.”

"Rooster Stele" and "Signal Squares" SOLD

"Sled Marker" SOLD

"Flagship" SOLD

As many as six or seven layers are applied, then scraped and sanded away in certain areas to reveal the desired colors and forms, so that the first layer of paint might be the final one to appear. This technique contrasts with the traditional practice of building up layer upon layer

of paint.

"Cherokee Ring and Squares"

"Rocket Marker"

"Playschool Markers" SOLD

Meeting Delos Van Earl, one is struck by

his strength of character and clarity of vision.

This is a man fully committed to his artistic inspiration and to the skills required to produce first-class artwork. He can usually be found in his cavernous studio, where he experiments with the properties of metal and seeks to define the essence of color and form through his creations.

The new Phoenix Series represents a natural evolution from his Nazca and Terra periods by making the primordial geometric shapes three dimensional, which brings out their sculptural qualities. Among them are large and small pyramid squares; columns called steles (inspired by the traditional monuments of Celtic Druids); and multiples such as hanging vertical shapes called markers.
