Henry Moore (1898-1986) was the most important British sculptor of the Twentieth Century and an internationally esteemed artist of his time. Yet his original drawings and graphic works on paper still remain a surprising discovery to many collectors.

During the Second World War, Moore executed a remarkable series of sketches in the London underground stations, which functioned as air raid shelters during the Blitz. There he found himself surrounded by fearful mothers clutching their children, openly displaying their emotions. These moments inspired his most tender family group drawings and prints, which for the most part served as preparatory renderings for many of his sculptures in the coming years.

On display in our exhibition “The Art of Henry Moore” are about 20 works from the years 1944 through 1979 executed in various mediums: original gouache and watercolor; ink, crayon and watercolor drawings; lithographs; etchings with aquatint and drypoint.

Textile printing as in "Two Standing Firgures" (left) appealed to Moore and other artists such as Matisse and Calder, because it allowed them to realize monumental compositions on a suitable scale.
