Henry Moore (1898-1986) was the most important British sculptor of the Twentieth Century and an internationally esteemed artist of his time. Yet his original drawings and graphic works on paper still remain a surprising discovery to many collectors. During the Second World War, Moore executed a remarkable series of sketches in the London underground stations, which functioned as air raid shelters during the Blitz. There he found himself surrounded by fearful mothers clutching their children, openly displaying their emotions. These moments inspired his most tender family group drawings and prints, which for the most part served as preparatory renderings for many of his sculptures in the coming years.
