On display in this exhibition are still life paintings on canvas by well-established Argentine hyper-realist painter Roberto Azank.

Roberto Azank is a painter with a truly unforgettable signature style. His rendering of common objects such as flowers, fruits and vessels set against a background of almost fauvist color planes demonstrates a superb draftsmanship. Yet these are not just ordinary still lifes. Roberto creates portraits of non-living objects seemingly transformed to another level of reality, as if archetypes in some sublime metaphysical world. Not just real but radiating the essence of the objects depicted.

Azank explores different forms of composition such as closeups of flowers still alive and attached to the plant, in which the theme is the flow of form and color. In others, the flower is part of a greater whole with a branch and stem and leaves. Here the theme is the interplay of lines and harmon-ious balance of the whole. The third approach is the classic still life, a cut flower in a vase.

Roberto’s interests lie in the abstract qualities of realism as opposed to the photographic copying of nature. With this extraordinary style the artist has returned the long tradition of realistic still life painting to its rightful place in contemporary art. He has been represented by our gallery for many years and is one of our most popular and successful artists.
